Inkjet 4D print, a technique of automatically folding a flat sheet into theoretically any shape, which was developed by Koya Narumi, a former Project Lecturer at RIISE (now Associate Professor at Keio University) and his team, was applied to and commercialized as earrings of A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE (Release date: December 1, 2025).
The automatic transformation of the origami not only enables designs previously impossible but also offers advantages such as reducing transportation burden and waste.

This project started from the idea of using inkjet printing technology to solve the social challenge in the fashion industry–the material waste in the fabrication process of accessories. Although there were many challenges with durability and productivity, experts from different fields and industries collaborated over approximately five years to achieve commercialization. It is also groundbreaking that the results of state-of-the-art research result was combined with the beauty and durability of a product.

RIISE will continue to actively connect research results to social implementation, aiming to create new values through technology. In the future, we will also apply the “Inkjet 4D Print” technology to areas beyond fashion, seeking to contribute to the society through sustainable manufacturing.
